2021.10.22 12:02 *rdghand* **Independent vs. Dependent Probability in GMAT Probability Questions -- What is the Difference?**

Hi everyone,

Here is a link to my latest blog post. This details the difference between Independent and Dependent Probability on the GMAT and how to tell the difference--includes worked examples!

I've excerpted here but you can read the full blog here:

https://privategmattutor.london/independent-vs-dependent-in-gmat-probability-what-is-the-difference/

Enjoy!

Rowan

-------------------------

It would be really easy to dive into a thoroughly flummoxing explanation of the difference between Independent and Dependent Probabilities, but I’ll spare you that.

In other words, a technical proof of this is somewhat mind-bending, so we’ll leave it here with a few real-world examples.

We can define each type in terms of, naturally, gambling games. Remember: Math for Degenerates.

Let’s start with...

**Independent Probability in GMAT Probability Questions** Independent Probability, for our purposes, basically means that if we calculate multiple Probabilities, each of those will “recycle” or be the same--completely unaffected by the Probabilities that came before.

That’s like rolling dice, flipping a coin, or spinning a roulette wheel9. Each Probability, assuming the game is working correctly (that is, the dice aren’t loaded or the wheel doesn’t stick in the wrong place), et cetera, will be *exactly the same for each turn.*

It would also be possible to engineer an Independent Probability out of, say, pulling the Queen of Hearts from a deck of cards in one of three pulls. If you pull one card and then replace it, the Probability is 1/52 *every single time!*

However, dice gives us a nice balance of options, so let’s use that as our example:

Not to offend any Dungeons and Dragons fans out there, but let’s work with a six-sided die because that’s what is traditionally used in a Western casino.

*What is the Probability of rolling a 3 if the die is thrown once?*

This should be fairly straightforward: the *desired outcomes* a re simply 1. That is, rolling a 3. The

*total outcomes* are simply all the possibilities: 6. Thus, the Probability of rolling a 3 is 1 out of 6 or 1⁄6.

This should be fairly straightforward: the *desired outcomes* a re simply 1. That is, rolling a 3. The *total outcomes* are simply all the possibilities: 6. Thus, the Probability of rolling a 3 is 1 out of 6 or 1⁄6.

However, let’s say that we’re looking for a Three the next time that we roll the dice. The Probability for that particular throw is still one possibility (the Three) out of the total possibilities (all 6), so it would be 1⁄6 again.

In fact, no matter how many times you throw the dice, the Probability for each throw is exactly the same.

*Note that this is NOT the same as to suggest the Probability that we roll a 3 each time. That’s something different, which we will discuss shortly--feel free to hold your breath--it won’t take long.*

**A Note on the Gambler's Fallacy in GMAT Probability Questions** This is actually a really important idea in business and life, and applies to a lot more than GMAT Quant. It applies to GMAT Critical Reasoning, too!

Let’s say that you’re a gambler flipping a coin, equally likely to land on Heads or Tails. You’ve flipped seven Heads in a row! You’re hot, man, on a winning streak. That next one *just has to be a Head*, right?

Yeah, no...

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 60%. (I'm a bot)

Outspoken conservative political commentator Candace Owens has suggested the US military invade Australia in order to free its people "Suffering under a totalitarian regime" while drawing comparisons to Hitler, Stalin and the Taliban.

"When do we deploy troops to Australia? When do we invade Australia and free an oppressed people who are suffering under a totalitarian regime? When do we spend trillions of dollars to spread democracy in Australia?" she asked.

While Australia has had about 1,500 deaths and 130,000 cases, the figures are far below the US death toll of 730,000 deaths and 45m cases, even on a per capita basis.

"When do we deploy? Of course, I ask that in jest because we all know the real answer. What is happening in Australia under the guise of a virus is federal overreach, tyranny, totalitarianism - the kind that gives birth to evil dictatorships and human atrocities," Owens added.

Last week US republican senator Ted Cruz made a similar swipe at Australia's Covid policies, lamenting the "Covid tyranny of their current government," which he said was "Disgraceful and sad".

"Individual liberty matters," Cruz declared, adding he had considered Australia the "Texas of the Pacific".

2021.10.22 12:02 *Sasselhoff* **PRS-Rimfire: Possibly a dumb question, but I'm new to the long range game...if I know my 50 yard DOPE increments out to 300 yards, can I split the difference in clicks on the scope for 25 yards?**

I'm just getting into the long range game, and I'm heading to shoot my first PRS-Rimfire match tomorrow (I've previously shot NRL22, but that's only out to 100 yards). I've only got one decent range near me that's out to 300 yards, but they only have targets set up every 50 yards. I've gone out there twice and gotten DOPE for 50 yard increments (starting at my zero of 50) all the way out...but I understand that PRS-Rimfire usually has targets at varied ranges, and while I can "wing it", I'd prefer if I could dial things in a little better to not just be guessing.

I've tried looking into some of the ballistic calculators out there...but they seem to be more based for centerfire rounds, and I couldn't really make sense of them (admittedly, it was a brief look at them, as I'm pretty busy these days).

So long story short, if I know 250 yards is "this many clicks" up from 200, could I split the difference if it is at 225?

Thanks in advance for the help folks!

2021.10.22 12:02 *edgar_vpacos* **If anyone is interested in "body doubling" again, I will be working today starting at 8:00am PDT and then will be doing cleaning and cooking starting at 5:00pm PDT. Feel free to do your "struggle task" at the same time so you don't feel alone.**

Hello! The last time I made a body doubling post I really benefited and a number of people asked for another, so here we are. The premise of this is that having someone do something at the same time you do can help if you are struggling to get a thing done. It could be anything: work, school, cleaning, exercise, etc.

I'm doing two today to accommodate for time zones and also give folks two options, depending on what their days are like. If you are in a different time zone and are not sure when the starting times are, there are resources available online such as time zone converter, Google, and other means.

Let's work on our struggle tasks together!

Hey everyone! I'm one of the organizers for the Austin Python Meetup. I was going to pop in here to share a talk I gave a couple of weeks ago on performance in Python, then it occurred to me that I should share them all!

We record our lectures and put them up on YouTube, so you don't have to attend the live events if you want to see some great talks about xonsh, Pyodide, FastAPI, click, and more!

The full list of videos is here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMYbTawA7NcTLOYOxg1WOoA

Thanks for watching! And if you'd be interested in giving a talk at our MeetUp next year, please get in touch!
